Whether you're an accomplished sketch artist or a novice looking to master the art of the pencil, these five sketching classes in Pittsburgh will help you become a master of the craft. Just imagine - your unskilled doodles may one day sell for millions!

Receive highly trained instruction when you participate in one of South Arts' classes, which include clothed figure drawing. Your instructor will give detailed demonstrations and discuss ways to create stronger figure drawings, with an emphasis on artistic anatomy. Media used will be pencil and or charcoal that the school provides, or you may bring your own. Drawings will be completed visually from a live model.

This uninstructed life drawing course runs every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. The admission fee is $10, and includes coffee, French pastries and drinks. You must provide your own tools, but trained artists will be on hand to answer any questions, and to give criticism and constructive feedback. This relaxed, community atmosphere is a free draw for adults 18+, and of any skill level; no prior sign-up required.

Join PCAS for its weekly Open Figure Studio that encourages its participants to sketch a nude model. Drop-in sessions run each Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The $15 admission fee will provide refreshments, and a hands-on monitor who will time poses and offer instruction as needed. PCAS does request that its participants possess prior experience, though artists of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Students will work in the medium of their choice, and at their own pace.

Another uninstructed class, Hoyt's sessions are held every Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.The studio space is limited to 10 artists on a first-come, first-served basis. The live sketch is completed in multiple poses, and any medium is welcome except solvents. The cost for this casual class is $15 for non Hoyt members, and $10 for members.

One of the finest art institutions in the world, the CMOA offers both instructed and uninstructed sketching classes for its artists-in-residence. The CMOA's current class rotation includes Painting the Figure, Life Drawing, Open Studio: The Undraped Model and Open Studio: Painting the Undraped Model. Participants may register online using the link above, or call to register by phone. Class fees vary by skill level and instructor.
