Apollo Borough Council Votes To Continue Police Chief's Suspension

APOLLO (KDKA) -- Apollo Borough Council met Thursday night to discuss the future of their suspended police chief for the first time.

Many who attended the borough council meeting in Apollo, Armstrong County, said they came expecting some kind of action to be taken against embattled police chief Paul Breznican.

The District Attorney confirms Breznican is under investigation, but the nature of the probe hasn't been made public.

Wednesday was the deadline for Council to either extend Breznican's suspension or fire him.

They voted unanimously to continue the suspension with pay.

A former borough manager who didn't want to be identified said an audit showed a gun purchased with federal grant money was missing and had been sold to someone.

"I'm certainly amazed and surprised that this is going on, but what are you going to do?" said David Heffernan, Apollo Borough Council President. "Tough position, well sure. It's kind of awkward; we don't have a manager right now - trying to find one of those, now we've got some problems with the police department, it makes things very interesting."

Borough Solicitor Chuck Pascal told KDKA-TV's Kym Gable a letter of explanation will be delivered to the chief and his attorney on Thursday.

"At this point, we're not going to say what the reason," said Pascal. "I mean, clearly there is, has been confirmed by the District Attorney, an ongoing criminal investigation. Clearly, that's a reason."
