Coroner: Beaver Co. Standoff Suspect Killed Self After Being Shot By Police

OHIOVILLE, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - A coroner says a Beaver County man, who was shot by police during an armed standoff, fatally shot himself and wasn't killed by a police sniper as first believed.

Beaver County Coroner David Gabauer says 37-year-old Ryan Shorak shot himself in the head after he was wounded three times by the police sniper outside Shorak's Ohioville home.

District Attorney David Lozier says Shorak holed up with weapons near each door in his home after drinking and threatened his wife Thursday night. She ran from the home, locked herself in a car and called police.

The man began beating the car, but eventually went back inside the home as officers arrived around 9:30 p.m.

Around 11:15 p.m., Shorak announced that he was going to count to 30 and open fire on police. When shots rang out, officers returned gunfire. However, it was initially unclear if Shorak was struck.

Shorak made various other threats throughout the evening during communications with police. They learned eventually that he had at least 10 firearms inside with him.

Lozier says Shorak threatened to fire more shots when the state police sniper shot him.

The shooting and police response remain under investigation.
