City Councilwoman Worried After String Of Shootings Involving Moving Vehicles

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man who was shot multiple times in the city's Fineview section Friday morning died about five hours after the incident.

He is now being identified as 27-year-old Dontae Thompson.

Authorities say Thompson's SUV flipped over on its roof after he crashed near the Allegheny Dwellings.

Police said it was the third incident this week involving people shooting at each other from moving vehicles. They have all happened in different North Side neighborhoods.

The other two incidents occurred on Perrysville Avenue on Wednesday, and the other exchange of gunfire began early Tuesday morning on Mt. Pleasant Road near Northview Heights.

There were no injuries in either of those shootings.

Darlene Harris, who represents a large section of the North Side on Pittsburgh City Council, says, "It's horrible. You have innocent people getting hurt, and our crime rate in the city is going on."

Harris told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "I was concerned last year when I saw a growing number of police officers either retiring or moving on to police jobs in other, higher-paying communities."

Harris says she believes right now that the city's police force is stretched too thin, but she would like to see more of a police presence in North Side neighborhoods to hopefully act as a deterrent to crime.
