Plea Agreement In The Works For Mom Who Forced 12-Year-Old To Drive

LATROBE (KDKA) -- Carrie Geyer waiving her preliminary hearing on charges she endangered the welfare of several of her children after she allegedly let her then 12-year-old son drive her van to "teach him some responsibility."

Carrie Geyer rushed out of what was to be her preliminary this morning surrounded by some of the very children she's charged with putting into harm's way in October.

"The most serious charge she has is endangering the welfare of children, she has five counts," said defense attorney Art McQuillan.

Geyer told investigators she let her son drive because he, "needed to be the man of the house and learn some responsibility."

"Half his car was on the berm, half was on the roadway," Tamara Madatic said.

Madatic witnessed the incident and even called the police to warn them. She followed Geyer's car as it wove through Unity Township and into Latrobe before finally stopping on Route 981 by Terry Way.

"Surely it was a lapse in judgment and poor judgement and certainly she'll be held accountable for that. She'll be able to get the counseling services she needs," McQuillan said.

Sources close to the case indicate a plea deal, in which Geyer will only face one count of endangering the welfare of children and 3 to 5 years of probation, is in the works. That's provided she abides by other yet to be determined court orders.

"It's not a good situation, but she's moving on from it and the support system she needs," McQuillan said.

No date set on Geyer's next court appearance. Right now, she has custody of all three children.
